Founded in 1978, Nahual (Cooperativa de Servicios Varios Nahual) is a cooperative of 126 farmers in Guatemala. Formed to provide producers with higher wages by connecting them with overseas buyers, Nahual, hoped to invest these monies in their cooperative to improve coffee quality and strengthen their community and environment. Since becoming Fair Trade certified with the Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) in 2001, producer sales have risen. Increased Fair Trade prices will enable the cooperative to support a scholarship program for cooperative members children, and initiate a reforestation project in the Ixtacapa River area within the next year.

About Cafe Femenino The story of Caf Femenino began in 2004 when women farmers from northern Peru began talking with their cooperative leaders about their desire to separate their coffee from the mens. These female members of Cecanor felt they put more care into their production, creating a superior product and wanted to know if there might be a market for womens coffee. Cecanor, having already established a partnership with Organic Products Trading Co. over the previous 10 years, collaborated with us to see how we might organize a womens only coffee for the international marketplace. Together we developed a full social program with the goal to empower female farmers using the production and sale of their own product as the vehicle to create social change. Today the Caf Femenino Program continues to have a huge impact in the daily lives of women around the world and creates greater gender equality in families, cooperatives, and communities.
