We are an authorized Canadian service centre for Technivorm and Breville, with parts stocked for every Moccamaster model ever made. In-store demos are available at our Burlington, Ancaster, and Toronto locations.

What to Know Before Buying an Automatic Drip Coffee Maker

The majority of automatic drip coffee makers sold in Canada fail at the most fundamental technical requirement: brew water temperature. The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) specifies that water should be between 91–96°C at the point of contact with the grounds for proper extraction. Machines that brew cooler produce flat, under-extracted coffee. Those that run too hot turn it bitter. Most machines on store shelves — at any price point below roughly $150 — never reach the required range. The difference is immediately noticeable in the cup.

Machines that have been independently tested and certified to meet the SCA standard are called Gold Cup certified brewers, and they represent a small fraction of the drip market. ECS Coffee focuses its automatic drip selection on this segment. The Technivorm Moccamaster has been manufactured in the Netherlands to the same engineering standard since 1968, with a copper heating element that brings water to brew temperature in under six minutes. The Breville Precision Brewer is the most feature-rich SCA-certified option on the market, offering six brew modes including a fully customisable My Brew mode with adjustable temperature, bloom time, and flow rate — ideal for enthusiasts who want to optimise for specific roasts and origins. For buyers who prefer the convenience of a built-in burr grinder, the Breville Grind Control grinds directly into the carafe before brewing, eliminating the need for a separate grinder on the counter.

Beyond temperature, the other key variable in automatic drip brewing is saturation. A good machine distributes water evenly across the grounds through a quality showerhead or spray arm, producing more uniform extraction than a single-point pour. Brew time matters too: a proper full-carafe brew should take four to six minutes, giving the water adequate contact time with the grounds. These are details that rarely appear in a spec sheet, but they show up clearly in the cup.

ECS Coffee is an authorized warranty and repair centre for both Technivorm and Breville in Canada. We stock parts for every Moccamaster model ever produced, including machines decades old — these are not appliances you replace every few years, and we service them accordingly. If you're ready to upgrade your morning routine, explore our automatic coffee maker collection online or visit our team in Burlington, Ancaster, or Toronto for a hands-on demonstration.

Questions Our Team Gets Every Week

Is the Technivorm Moccamaster really worth the price when you can get a regular drip coffee maker for $80?

That’s the right question to ask, and the honest answer is: it depends on how much the quality of your daily coffee matters to you. The price difference between a $80 machine and a Moccamaster is almost entirely explained by temperature control and build quality. Most sub-$150 drip brewers never reach the 92–96°C needed for proper extraction — they brew at 75–80°C and produce flat, under-extracted coffee that people compensate for by using more grounds. The Moccamaster brews at the right temperature, every time, for decades. If you buy decent coffee beans and you want to actually taste them, the Moccamaster justifies its price quickly. If you drink two cups in the morning and you’re happy with what you’re getting now, the upgrade may not be worth it for you — and we’ll tell you that honestly in-store.

What is SCA Gold Cup certification and does it actually matter?

The SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) Gold Cup standard defines the water temperature, brew time, and extraction yield that produce the best-tasting drip coffee. A machine that is SCA certified has been independently tested and verified to consistently hit those parameters — not just in lab conditions, but in real use. It matters because the certification removes the guesswork. You don’t need to trust a spec sheet or a marketing claim — an independent body has verified the machine does what it says. Both the Technivorm Moccamaster and Breville Precision Brewer carry SCA certification. Most machines sold at grocery stores and big-box retailers do not.

I make coffee for 2–4 people at home — which brewer is right for me?

For everyday households, look for a brewer that's simple to use and consistently reliable rather than one loaded with programmable settings. The best machines in this category use a selector switch or similar mechanism to automatically adjust brew speed and hotplate temperature based on how much you're brewing — so a half carafe and a full carafe both come out right. Reliability and build quality matter more here than bells and whistles; a well-made drip brewer in this category is often built to last decades. One thing to keep in mind: even a great everyday brewer only performs as well as the grind going into it, so a decent grinder is still worth having alongside it.

We need to brew 8–10+ cups consistently for an office or larger household — what do you recommend?

For higher-volume brewing, thermal carafe machines are usually the better category to look at over glass carafe-and-hotplate models. A thermal carafe keeps coffee hot for an hour or more without any heating element, which means better flavour retention and no risk of that "burnt hotplate" taste later in the day. A good option to look at is the Moccamaster KBGT - it uses the same Gold Cup brewing engine as the KBGV, but with a thermal carafe. Before choosing a machine in this category, it's worth asking who's responsible for descaling - most machines in this class need it every 2–3 months, and consistent maintenance is really what determines whether a machine lasts.

I want fresh-ground coffee without managing a separate grinder — is there an all-in-one option?

Grind-and-brew machines are the category to look at if you want fresh-ground coffee each morning without owning or maintaining a separate grinder. Brewers like the Breville Grind Control are designed exactly for this. These typically include a built-in burr grinder with adjustable grind size and dose, and many brew directly into a thermal carafe or travel mug for a streamlined routine. The trade-off with this category is flexibility — because the grinder is built in, you can't upgrade it independently down the line — so it suits buyers who value simplicity and consistency over long-term customization.
