Is the Technivorm Moccamaster really worth $450+ when you can get a drip coffee maker for $80?
That’s the right question to ask, and the honest answer is: it depends on how much the quality of your daily coffee matters to you. The price difference between a $80 machine and a Moccamaster is almost entirely explained by temperature control and build quality. Most sub-$150 drip brewers never reach the 92–96°C needed for proper extraction — they brew at 75–80°C and produce flat, under-extracted coffee that people compensate for by using more grounds. The Moccamaster brews at the right temperature, every time, for decades. If you buy decent coffee beans and you want to actually taste them, the Moccamaster justifies its price quickly. If you drink two cups in the morning and you’re happy with what you’re getting now, the upgrade may not be worth it for you — and we’ll tell you that honestly in-store.
What is SCA Gold Cup certification and does it actually matter?
The SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) Gold Cup standard defines the water temperature, brew time, and extraction yield that produce the best-tasting drip coffee. A machine that is SCA certified has been independently tested and verified to consistently hit those parameters — not just in lab conditions, but in real use. It matters because the certification removes the guesswork. You don’t need to trust a spec sheet or a marketing claim — an independent body has verified the machine does what it says. Both the Technivorm Moccamaster and Breville Precision Brewer carry SCA certification. Most machines sold at grocery stores and big-box retailers do not.
Can I get my Technivorm Moccamaster repaired in Canada, and is it worth repairing?
Yes on both counts. ECS is an authorized Technivorm service centre, and we stock parts for every Moccamaster model ever produced — including machines that are 15 and 20 years old. Moccamasters are one of the few consumer appliances genuinely worth repairing because the core brewing engine is so reliable and the parts are available indefinitely. A typical repair — thermostat, heating element, switch — costs significantly less than replacing the machine. Bring it to any of our three locations or ship it to Burlington. Many customers who bring in a machine for repair end up keeping it for another decade.
Should I buy the Moccamaster with a glass carafe (KBGV) or the thermal carafe (KBGT)?
It comes down to how you use your coffee. The KBGV Select has a glass carafe on a heated hotplate that keeps coffee at the ideal temperature for up to 100 minutes before automatically shutting off — this is our most popular model and the one we recommend for most households. The KBGT has a stainless steel thermal carafe with no hotplate — it keeps coffee hot through insulation alone for about an hour, and it’s better if you want to take the carafe to a different room, keep it warm for longer without a heating element, or if your counter space doesn’t allow for a power cord. Both brew identically to the same Gold Cup standard. The glass model is slightly less expensive. Come in and we’ll show you both.
