Descalers & Cleaners — The Right Product for Your Machine
Descaling and cleaning are two different jobs that require two different products — and the right product depends on the brand and model of machine you own. ECS Coffee carries brand-specific descalers and cleaners for Breville, DeLonghi, Jura, Philips Saeco, Gaggia, Bellucci, Lelit, and Keurig, as well as Urnex universal products for machines not covered by an OEM option in our catalogue. As an authorized Canadian service centre for Technivorm, Breville, DeLonghi, and Philips Saeco, our team sees the consequences of skipped maintenance regularly — this collection exists to help you avoid them.
No — they solve completely different problems and cannot substitute for each other. A descaler removes mineral deposits (limescale) that build up in the water path — the boiler, thermoblock, pipes, and heating element. A cleaner removes coffee oils and residue from the brew group, group head, shower screen, and filter baskets. Limescale is a water chemistry problem; coffee oil buildup is a contact surface problem. Using a cleaning tablet when you need to descale will not remove limescale. Using a descaler when you need to clean the brew group will not remove coffee oils. Both need to happen on separate schedules: descaling every 2–3 months or at the machine’s prompt, cleaning the brew group monthly or as prompted.
It is best to use the descaler made by your machines manufacturer specifically for your machine. Always follow your machine’s specific descaling procedure from the manual — the product just needs to be in the reservoir when you run the cycle. We carry descalers for all of the machines we sell.
Jura specifically recommends against using third-party products in their machines. Jura’s descaling tablets use a two-phase formula that removes scale and then applies corrosion protection to the fluid system. The 3-Phase Cleaning Tablets are matched to Jura’s automated cleaning cycle. Third-party products may not complete the automated cycle correctly, may not provide the corrosion protection phase, and may affect warranty coverage. ECS carries both Jura Descaling Tablets and Jura 3-Phase Cleaning Tablets. Use the Jura originals.
We do not recommend vinegar for espresso machines. Vinegar is acidic and can corrode internal components, seals, and rubber parts not designed for acetic acid. It leaves a strong odour that is difficult to rinse completely, which affects the taste of subsequent shots. It is also not formulated to address the specific mineral compounds in hard water scale as effectively as a proper descaling product. All of the descalers we carry — whether brand-specific or Urnex Dezcal — are designed specifically for coffee and espresso machines and rinse cleanly with no odour or taste transfer.
For descaling: every 2–3 months as a general guideline, though your machine’s built-in prompt is the best indicator. In areas with harder water (much of Ontario outside of major cities), more frequent descaling is needed. For brew group cleaning: most superauto machines prompt this automatically, typically every 200–300 shots. For semi-automatic machines, a monthly backflush cycle with a cleaning tablet is the standard practice, plus a weekly soak of portafilter baskets. Steam wand cleaning: monthly, or any time you notice restricted steam flow or off-flavours in steamed milk. Grinder cleaning: every 2–3 months for home use, more frequently in a commercial setting.
Expert Quote: “The majority of the machines that come into our service department with performance problems (slow brewing, poor temperature, weak pressure) have one thing in common: they haven’t been descaled regularly. Limescale builds up on the heating element and thermoblock and acts as insulation. The machine has to work harder to reach temperature, it runs longer, and eventually something fails that didn’t need to fail. A $20 descale every three months is one of the most effective thing you can do to protect your espresso machine.”
We are an authorized service centre for trusted brands like Technivorm and Breville in Canada. Our in-house service technicians and wide range of parts ensures support beyond your machine purchase.
We actually use the equipment we sell. Our brewers & espresso machines have been used by our team in our showroom, evaluated for coffee quality, and chosen because we'd put it on our own counters. We don't stock drip brewers just to fill a category.
Unlike big box retailers, we carry the beans to go with the brewer. Our team can recommend the right grind size, coffee origin, and dose for the machine you're buying. The brewer and the coffee are two halves of the same result.
Family-owned since 1997, ECS Coffee is Canada's destination for coffee, espresso gear, and expert service. We know which machines last, which ones fail, and what proper maintenance looks like over a 10-15 year ownership cycle.
