Established in March 2018 by Mark Marsolais-Nahwegahbow, an Ojibwe citizen and band member of the Whitefish River First Nation on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Birch Bark Coffee Company was built on a foundation of purpose-driven commerce. Moving to Ottawa, Ontario, Marsolais-Nahwegahbow sought to create a business that could act as a self-determining tool to address critical social issues affecting Indigenous communities. The brand name honors the historical and cultural significance of the birch tree, whose versatile bark has been used by First Nations for centuries for medicine, transportation, and artistic craft.

What completely sets Birch Bark Coffee Company apart from conventional roasters is its direct, tangible integration of social justice into its business model. Through the Birch Bark Coffee Company Foundation Fund, established at the Ottawa Community Foundation, up to 10% of net earnings from every bag of coffee sold is directed toward critical initiatives. The giving stream is divided to support prominent Indigenous-serving organizations aligned with the Seven Grandfather Teachings—focusing on water purification systems for homes on First Nations reserves—and to fund campus food security programs for Indigenous post-secondary students experiencing food insecurity.
