About Charleston Chew: A 1920s Candy Classic

Charleston Chew was created in 1922 by the Fox-Cross Candy Company, founded by former stage actor Donley Cross and his partner Charlie Fox. The candy was named after the Charleston, the high-energy dance that swept through the Roaring Twenties, and its original bar paired chewy vanilla nougat with a milk chocolate coating.

Over the decades the candy became known for its distinctive chewy texture — and for a fun habit among fans of freezing the bars before eating them. Charleston Chew has been part of Tootsie Roll Industries since 1993, joining a portfolio of long-loved American candy brands.

The single-serve hot chocolate collection reimagines that candy as a warm drink. The Chocolatey Nougat hot chocolate brings the bar's classic chocolate-and-nougat character to the cup, while the Strawberry Nougat version adds a sweet, fruity twist — both offering a comforting, dessert-like treat.
