Able Brewing: Redefining Sustainable Coffee Extraction

Able Brewing was born out of a practical challenge faced by specialty coffee roaster and cafe professional Keith Gehrke in Portland, Oregon. One morning while brewing with a manual pour-over coffee maker at home, Gehrke discovered he had run out of traditional paper filters. Driven to find a high-quality, permanent alternative that would not compromise the nuanced flavour profile of specialty coffee beans, he set to work designing a reusable option. This experimentation resulted in the launch of Able Brewing and the creation of the iconic KONE coffee filter.

The company made a lasting impact on the coffee community by engineering reusable stainless steel filters designed specifically for manual brewing methods like the Chemex and the AeroPress. The KONE filter features a photochemically etched hole pattern that allows flavourful coffee oils to pass through while keeping fine sediment out of the cup, yielding a full-bodied brew with incredible clarity. Following this success, Able developed the DISK coffee filter, a reusable stainless steel screen optimized for the AeroPress that gives users greater control over extraction styles.
