More Info

Bourbon Tekisic, often referred to as “improved Bourbon,” is a variety developed by the Salvadoran Coffee Institute through a careful selection process of the highest-performing Bourbon plants. Tekisic was developed through a process known as mass selection, where superior plants are chosen, their seeds combined, and the process repeated over multiple generations. This method produced a variety that ripens early, delivers excellent cup quality under optimal conditions, and offers higher yields than traditional Bourbon at elevations between 900–1500 meters.

Developed over nearly 30 years by the Salvadoran Institute for Coffee Research (ISIC), Tekisic was released in 1977. Its name comes from “tekiti”—meaning “work” in the Nahuatl language—a fitting tribute to the decades of dedication behind its creation.

While prized for its quality and productivity, Tekisic—like Bourbon—is not resistant to major diseases such as coffee leaf rust. Today, it remains a cornerstone of coffee production in El Salvador.

As a washed coffee, this lot offers a clean, transparent expression of the varietal—allowing its natural characteristics to shine without the influence of processing.

How-to Brew
  • Espresso: 18.5g dose for a balanced, syrupy shot
  • Pour-over: 16:1 water-to-coffee ratio for a smooth, classic cup

Take your time with this coffee—its flavour evolves beautifully as it cools.

      Whole Bean Grind Chart

If you are purchasing a bag of whole bean coffee on our website, you can select your grind method of choice (at no extra charge!) from the dropdown and we will grind and ship it to you. We grind the beans freshly for you at our warehouse in ECS Coffee Burlington right before your order is shipped, and reseal the package to maintain optimal freshness in transit.

If you are visiting us in store, you can also request for your beans to be ground in store before you take them home.

We use a commercial BUNN Burr Grinder to grind the beans.

Please note: Freshly ground coffee is non-refundable and not returnable. To ensure that you receive a ground coffee that is consistent with your brew method of choice, refer to our Grind Chart below!

      FINE

For use with espresso machines. Fine coffee grinds will have the size and feel of sand.

      MEDIUM FINE

Choose a medium fine grind if you are brewing with a Moka Pot, stovetop espresso brewers or an Aeropress.

      MEDIUM

Cone Filter - We use two medium settings depending on your brewer. The Cone Filter medium setting is a bit finer, and is suitable for pour-over drip brewers (cone style) such as Hario, Melitta, Clever. It is also used for cone style automatic brewers.

Flat Bottom Filter - This setting is suitable for coffee machines with a flat bottom basket filter, such as commercial automatic drip machines. It is also an appropriate setting for if you have a refillable coffee capsule for use in Keurig® machines. Medium coffee grinds will be around the same size as sea salt.

      PERCOLATOR

If you are brewing with a percolator, the grind setting is a bit coarser than your standard medium grind, to minimize grinds making it through the filter. We use a percolator-specific setting on our grinder.

      MEDIUM COARSE

       Vaccuum brewers, Chemex.

      COARSE

For french press, cold brew coffee. A coarse grind is very chunky in look, like crushed peppercorns.

Remember that this coffee grind chart is a guideline! If you use a coffee brewing method that is not listed here, feel free to reach out and we will let you know which grind is the best for your brewer.
