Technivorm Moccamaster KM5 Burr Coffee Grinder, Matte White #49522

Replacing my Breville smart grinder pro with this. The Breville didn't break (unlike the Breville coffee machine) but after a few years it didn't grind the same, I assume the burrs wore down, and one cannot replace the whole set, they can only replace the top part.

Unlike this unit, which after 550lb of coffee (rated life of burrs), which should be about 10 years down the road one should easily be able to acquire replacement burrs- maybe even upgraded ones as it is reported this unit is derived from Eureka.

And the motor should last that long, the first thing you notice is the weight: it weighs 10 lbs which usually means a higher quality motor. My Compak K10 espresso grinder is 40lbs, but not a fair comparison.

Yes, the Breville had more bells and whistles, the timer for grinding was nice, but buying a new drip grinder every 3 years changes my priorities. Holding the button down to grind is a non-issue for me, I just hold the filter directly under the spout for 5-6 seconds and I have 17-19 grams of coffee, enough for 1 cup of coffee in my Technivorm one cup coffee maker. Why bother to use the glass container and have another item to clean? And I notice much less fines on the sides of the filter after brewing, meaning the coffee grounds are much more consistent, and the result is it makes a much better tasting cup of coffee.

So my recommendation is to skip "cheaper" grinders and buy something of higher quality, that will last you much longer- probably will save you money in the long run, and the coffee tastes better.

I now have the matching drip grinder to match my drip coffee maker. They look pretty good together, don't they?

This beast is impressive! I was shocked at the weight of this grinder and one can tell they did not cheap out on garbage parts. It is metal and glass. The only plastic is where the beans go into the hopper. When I used it I had to do a double take. Was it running??!?! Yup! I cannot get over how quiet this grinder is compared to my old burr grinder. I had someone downstairs who is a light sleeper and they did not even know I had it running. I just wish Technivorm made their grinders in the same colours as their coffee makers. I have a lovely red theme going in my kitchen and sadly had to break away but at least the silver blends in nicely. I know many will find the price off putting but do it! I watched until there was a sale and I do not regret it. I cannot go back. And there is even a grind setting to match the Mochamaster brewer.

Grinds well! Heavy duty. Nice, trim appearance!
