The Breville Oracle is the perfect machine for someone who is NOT a perfectionist and does NOT want to train to become a skilled barista. The long and short of it is that this machine will deliver very good coffee, easily, every time... but not perfect.
If you wish to continue reading I will give the long version... This machine offers a manual override for every function it performs, which will allow perfection to be achieved. But, if you are not using all the automation, why on earth would you pay for it? You can buy essentially the same machine from Breville without the automation for over $1,000 less (a lot of yummy coffee can be bought for that money).
The Grind... the factory default for dose on this machine is about 22g. This is a heavy dose, but if you like a lot of espresso it is not a problem in and of itself (there are also hack videos on YouTube that can show you how to adjust this within the machine if you choose). I say "about 22g" because this dose is achieved by volume, not weight. I have had doses ranging from 21.3g - 22.9g I am guessing that the humidity of your beans will be the largest factor in this variance.
The Pull... Again, the pull is a set "time", not a weighted shut off. This varies quite a bit as you pull more shots (machine getting hotter?). Especially if you are pulling 2 shots, one for you and one for a friend one after the other. The weight of 2 shots drawn for the exact same time will be dramatically different. It is also different from day to day. Again, you can override the set time (as I do) and brew onto a scale for perfection... but then, why do I have an automated machine?
The Milk Frothing... this is VERY well done also, but, you can do a better job manually if you know how (and the machine will also allow this).
In conclusion, I am happy with this purchase as I can be a crazy person and tweak all the manual settings if I want to... BUT, my partner can easily and quickly make herself an Americano (another excellent one button function) without knowing ANYTHING about coffee extraction theory. I can quickly make myself and a guest a very nice espresso or latte with very little effort and overall it is very nice to look at on the counter.
In my opinion, the only way my complaints about this machine could be addressed would be if Breville can figure out a way to automate their functions by weight rather than volume and time and perhaps adding a vent out the side of the foaming wand to promote circulation of the dairy as air is introduced. Those are the only issues that keep me from declaring this machine excellent.
